Mockingbird programme

The Mockingbird programme is designed to emulate the strength of an extended family, fostering strong relationships among children, young people, and foster carers. Central to this approach is the formation of a constellation - a nurturing community of six to ten satellite families, supported by a hub carer and liaison worker.

We are proud to operate two Mockingbird constellations, grounded in a proven, evidence‑based model that enhances support and connection across foster families.

Within each constellation, foster families provide peer support, share guidance, and engage in social activities such as sleepovers, enabling relationships to deepen and permanence to be strengthened.

One of the principal aims of the Mockingbird programme is to prevent placement breakdown by proactively offering support, helping to resolve challenges early and reassuring children and young people that they are part of a responsive, caring network.

Through these constellations, AfC Fostering seeks to:

  • Create a resilient and caring network of families
  • Reinforce relational bonds between children, young people, and carers
  • Encourage peer learning and emotional backup
  • Foster stability and permanence in placements

What our families say about the Mockingbird programme

The success of our Mockingbird constellations is built on the relationships fostered between families - and particularly the vital role of our Hub Carers, who act as a central point of support, connection and care.

Here’s what some of our satellite carers and families have shared about their experience:

“Our Hub Carer is incredibly thoughtful and proactive. She keeps the group connected and motivated, always reaching out to ensure everyone feels included. People really respond to her - she brings us together.”

“Mockingbird is a safe space where we can share openly, without judgment. It’s also something that gives our children a sense of extended family.”

“For me, Mockingbird has given me breathing space. It’s helped my mental health by giving me time to reconnect with family and friends. That’s something I didn’t realise I was missing.”
