Benefits and support for our foster carers

We value the incredible commitment our foster carers make, and we’re proud to offer a comprehensive package of financial support and practical benefits to help you get started and feel supported every step of the way. Here’s what you can expect as one of our foster carers:

Set-up allowance

To help you prepare for your first placement, we provide a one-off set-up payment of £500 per household. This is designed to cover the costs of essential items such as furniture, bedding, storage, or safety equipment, (decorating or home improvement costs are not included) to make sure you’re fully equipped to welcome a child into your home.

Welcome payment

In addition to the set-up allowance, newly approved mainstream (non-connected/kinship) foster carers will receive a £500 welcome payment as a thank you for joining our fostering community.

Council tax reimbursement

As a foster carer with AfC, you will have the council tax you pay reimbursed for any periods of time you have an AfC child in placement. Read more on our council tax reimbursement page.

Foster carer identity card

You’ll be issued with a foster carer ID card, which gives you access to discounts and special offers from a range of local shops, leisure facilities, and services.

Library card

Our dedicated library card allows you borrowing privileges across all borough libraries - giving you and your family easy access to books, resources, and educational materials.

Full membership of The Fostering Network

As a member of The Fostering Network, you’ll benefit from expert advice, specialist training, and access to a national support network for foster carers.

Full access to FosterTalk

You’ll also enjoy free access to FosterTalk’s professional support services, including legal advice, counselling, and practical guidance whenever you need it.

Together, these benefits are designed to ensure you feel recognised, supported, and ready to make a difference in a child’s life.
