EISS celebrates £1,500 Tesco Stronger Starts Grant for student sports equipment
The Education Inclusion Support Service (EISS) in Kingston and Richmond has been awarded a £1,500 Tesco Stronger Starts grant to help provide much-needed outdoor and sports equipment for pupils attending its new tuition bases.
The funding was secured following a successful community vote in local Tesco stores, where shoppers used the retailer’s well-known blue token scheme to support local projects. The bid was written by EISS Advisory Teacher, Helen Price, whose application highlighted the importance of physical activity in supporting the wellbeing, confidence and development of children and young people with additional needs.
Representatives from EISS visited Tesco this week to collect the cheque, including Helen Price, Lead Teacher at The Bridge Sam Norwood, and three students.
EISS supports schools across Kingston and Richmond in developing inclusive practices and providing guidance for children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). The service also works closely with vulnerable pupils who are unable to attend school because of physical or mental health needs, helping them continue their education in safe and supportive environments.
As part of its expanding provision, EISS is currently establishing two tuition bases designed to offer flexible education alongside a broad and balanced curriculum. The new grant will help equip these spaces with outdoor and sports resources aimed at encouraging physical activity and improving students’ health and wellbeing.
In the successful funding bid, Helen Price explained the wider impact that sport and physical activity can have on young people’s lives.
“Taking part in sport and physical activity can have a big impact on the lives of children and we believe that every young person should have the opportunity to enjoy the physical and social benefits of physical activity."
"In addition to improving physical and mental wellbeing, it can provide a safe space, mentoring opportunities, and an opportunity to develop key life skills and access specialist support.”
EISS said the funding will make a meaningful difference to students accessing its tuition provision, helping create opportunities for exercise, teamwork, confidence-building and social connection through sport and outdoor activity.
