Fees and allowances
Achieving for Children provides foster carers with the financial means to meet the needs of children placed in your care.
As a foster carer at Achieving for Children, and with a child in placement, you’ll receive financial support in two parts:
- A fee – in recognition of your valued role as a foster carer.
- An allowance – to cover the cost of caring for a child. The allowance for your foster child covers things like food, clothes and everyday travel. It should be managed just like a typical family budget. The amount varies according to the age of the child.
At present, our allowances exactly match the rates recommended by the Department for Education.
Our fee and allowances are paid to our approved foster carers according to the child’s needs and the carer’s skills and experience and include:
- A training and development programme aligned to our fee bands recognising caring experience and professional expertise, as well as training you participate in
- A banded reward fee based on your experience and skill level
- A supplementary fee, paid per child in placement if the child reaches a threshold level of need
- An allowance based on the needs of the child paid per child in placement
- Continued supervision and support from a supervising social worker, alongside peer-to-peer and therapeutic support
Foster carers are classed as self-employed with HMRC for tax and National Insurance purposes. More information on this is provided on the Government’s national information portal: www.gov.uk/foster-carers.
At Achieving for Children, we fully support our foster carers through the simple process of registering as self-employed. This comes with tax exemptions and benefits. As a foster carer, you’ll also be eligible for National Insurance credits, which counts towards your State Pension.
Fostering payments won’t usually affect any benefits you get. In your fostering training, we’ll guide you about tax, insurance and pensions.
